On the
Interactive Games
page, in the games posted from the
15th Annual OK Scholastic Championship, here is some newsworthy
commentary from Chess Master Chuck Unruh:
Boldly, Stephen Gehly chose to defend against one of Kenny Lin's favorite lines
in the last round. The game decided the 2011 Oklahoma Scholastic Champion and
the State's Denker representative. Kenny overreached in the position and Stephen
steadfastly held the extra material. Congratulations to Stephen Gehly . Earning
the right to represent Oklahoma at the Denker tournament held in Orlando,
Florida this year is a huge accomplishment. The opportunity to play some of the
best juniors in the country is in his future. I'm sure he will follow in the
footsteps of Oklahoma's other Denker Champions and give it his best!
Most improved Premier player belongs to Brittney Sabatka for outstanding play in
both her game against Stephen Gehly and win over last year's Champion Hannah
Farell. Brittney is rated at least two hundred points lower than Hannah, yet
plays a very solid game in the head to head final round. USCF holds the 2011
Girl's K-12 National Championship during August at this year's US Open in
Orlando, Florida. I look forward to following Brittney's progress during the
National Championship.
Be sure to play through the game of Copeland,Nathan (314) - Tu,N. (464). Two
aspiring young Section 2 chess players turned in a most interesting game from
the recent Championship. The first score sheet was written in the mix of the
old, old style of chess books in the 18th Century with new algebraic notation.
So, 1.King's Pawn to E4 was a little much for the score sheet. Soon after, with
a little guidance, 1.PE4 was a real improvement and fit nicely in the scoresheet
boxes. After the "Shock and Awe" of 6. Ne6 + Kxf7, I wasn't sure the game met a
minimum threshold for quality. What dawned on me is the relative view from my
experience and how Chess Grandmasters would in turn view my tournament games. I
can imagine some of my best moves as very unsound and reckless ideas in the eyes
of the top players. Without more fanfare, the game review was fun to say the
least. Hopefully, both juniors continue in their study of chess and find a path
to the Premier Section.

added the following comments regarding USCF ratings for national
championships in 2009:
If you do not have a USCF rating and are
interested in getting one for this event (so you don't have to play in the
unrated section), by early January please email
admin@swatek.com or call 918-812-1591.
- On the
Tournament Results page, added the following
commentary about ratings at OSCO tournaments:
OSCO is now using Chess eXpress Ratings
service for all sections of all its tournaments.
For individual player's Chess Express ID number, rating and complete tournament history, click
HERE. The
Premier section is also dual rated with USCF (see next paragraph). Using
Chess eXpress Ratings it is no longer necessary to pay an extra membership
fee to play in OSCO tournaments, cutting the cost of a player's first
tournament each year by nearly half or more. This savings has taken on more
importance in these challenging economic times. The simplicity of the Chess
eXpress Ratings system also saves countless hours of volunteers time with a
simple tournament rating process and elimination of tracking and processing
memberships. This will help OSCO's recruitment and retention of tournament
directors and organizers, facilitating the continued growth of our mission
to serve more of Oklahoma's youth through chess.OSCO affiliate clubs are
able to also conduct Chess eXpress rated tournaments under the same terms.
Please email admin@okschess.org or
call 918-342-4245 if you're interested in doing so.
For Premier section player's USCF ID number, membership
expiration date, ratings and complete tournament history, click
HERE. For all
players that earn the honor of playing in the Premier section at Grand Prix
events, OSCO provides a 1-year membership in the US Chess Federation, so no
membership expense is neseccary from any of our players. The USCF
published rating of an event's calendar month is used for tournament section
and pairing purposes, if the use of a higher current rating is not requested
by the player. Published ratings were captured from the current ratings in
on tournament history page in the first week of the prior month.
- Updated the
Registration Form Instructions page to reflect simplifications in
the OSCO tournament registration process. The significant charges are
captured in the following from that page.
Sections are listed on the tournament flier. You do not need to list a
section, rating, member ID number or any expiration date on the registration
form. All players rated 1100 or more in either the
current Chess eXpress Rating system or published USCF rating for the
tournament month will be placed in the Premier section. Current Chess
eXpress ratings are used for all other sections. Any USCF or other rating
rating will only be used for other sections if the player does not have a
ChesseXpress rating. Players that are unrated, or have a non-Chess eXpress
rating that does not properly reflect their skill level, will have an
initial Chess eXpress rating assigned by the Tournament Director based on
the performance rating of their first tournament as calculated by the
pairing software. This less arbitrary initial rating assignment should help
the player's rating to stabilize at the correct level more quickly. The
tournament director will place all players in the appropriate section, based
on their rating and grade level. Due to the overlap between sections, 6th
graders rated under 700 will be placed in the section with players in other
grade levels from the same school , or in the K-6 Under 700 section if there
are none.
When you check-in, you can check to see your rating and what section you
are in. At that time, if needed, you may request a section change from the
tournament director on the pairing computer. Players may 'play up' in the
next higher rated section if they are within 100 points of their section's
upper limit.
Please call 918-812-1591 with any questions, comments or concerns about
this process.
