43 Students from 10 schools within the Oklahoma City School District

participated in the first Sunday Afternoon tournament of the school year

today at the Downtown Library. For most of the students, it was their

first experience with tournament play, and most of them walked away more

confident in their playing abilities.

The district tournaments will be held once a month, September through

April. At each tournament, everyone plays five games. At the end of the

April tournament, awards will be given out for Elementary, Middle

School, and High School sections. Individual as well as team scores will

be rewarded.

As of tournament #1, the standings are as follows:

Elementary:

Wilson – 17 points

Cleveland – 7.5

Sequoyah – 6.5

Eagle Ridge – 3.0

Middle School:

Classen – 9.5

John Marshall – 3.0

Taft – 3.0

Belle Isle – 2.0

Independence – 1.0

High School

Harding – 10.5

Eagle Ridge – 10.0

Classen – 3.5

Scores are based on the number of points scored by the top 4 players

from each school; therefore, schools with higher participation received

higher scores.

Every month, the points will be worth more than the month before. For an

explanation of the scoring formula, or results for individual students,

please contact Daniel Wade at wilsonchess@cox.net.

The remaining tournaments will be held at Wiley Post Park, SW 17th &

Robinson, at 1:30 pm, on

October 12

November 9

December 13

January 11

February 8

March 8, and

April 19.

Cost for each tournament is $2. You do not have to have an organized

chess club at your school to participate, but you must attend a school

within the Oklahoma City School District. Please contact Dan Wade at

405-426-7634 or wilsonchess@cox.net to sign up.
