Low Cost Medals

Here's how to get the best deal on chess medals for your in-club tournament awards, or interscholastic tournament honorable mention awards.

First, buy chess medals like those pictured below from Wholesale Chess for as low as $1.69 each. These have raised lettering of the manufacturers name on the back and a rectangular area in a raised edge for engraving.

To save on engraving, get some Avery Gold (8987) or Silver (8986) Foil Mailing Labels. You can use these to "engrave" the medals for pennies apiece.

Print the "engraving" on the labels in a space that can be trimmed down to 3/8 by 1-3/8 inch to fit in the rectangular space with the raised edge on the back of the medal. Be sure to change the print setup for glossy photo paper or transparency. Otherwise, the printing will be too light, as in the upper left of the photo below. After you print the foil labels, cover them with transparent tape before cutting them out, to prevent smearing of the ink.

If you want something nicer, you'll probably spend twice as much or more through a trophy shop with engraving.
